Some side quests begin with a road out of town. This one begins with your name. I shared NASA’s Your Name in Landsat on TikTok because it is such a lovely idea: familiar letters, found in an unfamiliar view of the world. A small invitation to stop scrolling and look a little closer.
The NASA interactive lets you enter a name and see it spelled out using Landsat imagery of Earth. It is simple enough to enjoy without knowing anything about satellites. You bring the word; the images offer another way to see it.
What I like about the idea is the change in attention. We spend so much time reading words that we barely notice the shapes of the letters themselves. Place those shapes in a landscape and something ordinary becomes interesting again. You start with something you recognise, then find yourself looking beyond it.
There is a little of the wanderer’s instinct in that. The curiosity that makes you take a different road, linger over a map, or wonder what a place looks like from somewhere else. Sometimes all it takes is a new angle to make the world feel wide again.
