A Hidden Corner of Gippsland

Some of the best side quests begin without much ceremony. No bucket list, no famous landmark, no carefully planned route. Just a turn off the main road and the feeling that there might be something worth finding beyond it. That was the mood behind this little Gippsland detour.

Gippsland has a way of making the familiar feel surprisingly wild. The roads stretch out, the towns get smaller, and the landscape shifts between farmland, bush and pockets of forest. You do not have to travel far before Melbourne feels much further away than it really is.

This particular stop was less about ticking off a destination and more about following curiosity. Sunny was along for the adventure, which usually changes the pace in the best way. Walks become slower. Interesting smells become important. A patch of shade or a quiet track can become the whole point of the day.

That is something I keep coming back to with Eden Quest. Exploration does not always need to be epic. Sometimes it is simply choosing the road you have never taken before and giving yourself enough time to notice what is there.

Why Gippsland works so well for a side quest

East of Melbourne, Gippsland is a region where the landscape can change quickly. Open farmland gives way to eucalyptus forest, river valleys, small towns and quieter back roads. That variety makes it particularly good for an unhurried day trip, where every stop does not need to be mapped out in advance.

For me, the appeal is the breathing room. Once you move away from the major highways, the journey starts to feel less like getting somewhere and more like exploring. Pulling over for a view, following a short walking track or stopping in a town you have never visited can become the memorable part of the day.

If you are travelling with a dog, check the rules for each reserve, park or walking track before you arrive. Access can change from one place to the next. Sunny joined me on this particular adventure, but I never assume that means every nearby track is dog friendly.

There is also something grounding about travelling closer to home. You arrive without the pressure that can come with a major trip. There is no sense that every minute has to count. You can stop because the light looks good, take the dog for a wander, sit somewhere quiet and let the day unfold.

For anyone chasing their own Gippsland side quest, that is probably the only practical advice I would give: leave some room in the plan. Check local access and dog rules for the place you are visiting, pack for Victoria’s changeable weather, and then resist the urge to schedule every hour.

The places that stay with us are not always the ones we travelled furthest to reach. Sometimes they are the unexpected corners close enough for an ordinary day trip, discovered at exactly the moment we needed a little space.

There are still so many of those places around Victoria. Quiet roads, forests, rivers and small towns waiting beyond the familiar route. Maybe the real hidden gem is not a single location at all. Maybe it is remembering that adventure can begin much closer to home.
